Transalpina

Transalpina (DN67C) the highest mountain pass in Romania is the perfect combination of twisty bends, great scenery and tradition. Forget hunting down info online, this guide will get you geared up for an epic motorcycle ride on this incredible mountain road!

A Bit of History

Built between 1930 and 1938, the Transalpina wasn't some fancy tourist trap. It was a regular road connecting Transylvania and Wallachia. Stretching for 87 miles (139 kilometers) through the heart of the Carpathian Mountains, it reaches a cool 6,371 feet (1,942 meters) at its highest point. Nicknamed "The King's Road," it was even opened by King Carol II himself, fancy that!

When to Ride

Unlike its well-known cousin, the Transalpina has a longer season, typically opening in May and closing in October, weather permitting. But even then, the exact opening date can change depending on how fast they get rid of all that pesky winter snow.

Planning Your Trip

If you are coming from Poland, Czech Republic or Slovakia you will most likely enter Romania at Satu Mare (Csengersima - Petea border crossing). And if you are looking for a safe and quiet place to rest after a full day’s journey, Casa Irinella (bed & breakfast) offers secure gated parking for motorcycles, fresh beer on arrival and a delicious breakfast the following morning, to get you ready for the next leg of your trip towards Transalpina.

The scenery changes all the time, keeping things interesting. Dense forests give way to wide-open meadows, all leading up to that jaw-dropping view from the peak. The Transalpina is a more relaxed ride with fewer sharp turns, so you can really soak up the amazing landscapes.

The Transalpina brings in a lot of tourists, not just motorcyclists. You'll also see cyclists and nature lovers enjoying the beauty. There are guesthouses and campsites along the way for all budgets, but booking ahead during peak season (summer) is a good idea.

Must-Sees on the Transalpina

  • Wild Horse Watch: Keep your eyes peeled for herds of wild Freiberg horses roaming free in the grasslands. Pretty cool, right?

  • Vidra Lake: This crystal-clear glacial lake nestled in the mountains is a perfect spot to pull over and snap a stunning photo.

  • The Mirror Lake: Live up to its name, this lake reflects the surrounding peaks in perfect detail. It's like riding into a postcard!

  • Şuganu Pass: The highest point on the Transalpina, marked by a big monument you can't miss.

Friendly Rider Tips

  • Riding Season: Aim for late May to October, but June to August is your best bet for guaranteed sunshine and clear roads.

  • Gas Up: Gas stations are few and far between, so fill up your tank before reaching Sebes (Transylvania side) or Novaci (Wallachia side).

  • Wildlife Watch: Bears and boars might occasionally cross the road. Slow down, keep your distance, and admire them from afar. Never feed them!
